Don’t Let Your Heart Float Away This Loy Krathong

Oct 4, 2025, 12:00 AMShareShare Article

Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most beloved festivals, celebrated on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month (usually in November). Floating a krathong — a small basket made from banana leaves — down the river is a symbolic gesture of asking forgiveness from the Goddess of Water and wishing for a bright future under the moonlight.

Love and Belief under the Full Moon

Beyond its spiritual meaning, Loy Krathong has also become a night of romance. Many believe that floating a krathong with their loved one will help their relationship last forever. In a 2022 survey, 62% of young Thais said they saw Loy Krathong as a special day to express love and intimacy with their partners.

But it’s not just for couples — the festive, moonlit atmosphere also makes it a night when singles might unexpectedly meet someone new.

Intimacy with Awareness

Love and closeness are natural parts of human relationships. What’s equally important is being aware of safe sex and self-protection. Talking about sex should not be taboo — it’s a sign of maturity and mutual respect.

Statistics show that during Loy Krathong, incidents of unsafe sex tend to increase, especially among teenagers who gather for late-night celebrations. A 2023 report revealed that about 28% of young people felt pressured by friends to drink alcohol during the festival — a factor that often leads to risky decisions.

Why Protection Matters

Using a condom is one of the most effective ways to prevent both unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Condoms are available for both men and women, yet many people still feel embarrassed to carry them. In truth, carrying a condom doesn’t mean you plan to use it — it shows you’re responsible and ready to protect yourself and your partner.

Proper and consistent condom use can reduce the risk of HIV and other STIs by up to 90%, and prevent pregnancy by up to 98%.

How to Talk with Your Partner

Be honest and open.
Discussing sex might feel awkward at first, but open communication helps build trust and understanding between partners.

Emphasize care and safety.
Protection is not just about you — it’s about both of you. Saying something like, “Let’s stay safe for both our sakes,” shows care and respect.

Respect each other’s feelings.
Some may feel that using protection makes things less “natural.” Listening and understanding each other’s concerns helps find a solution that feels right for both.

A Safe and Joyful Festival

Loy Krathong should be a time of happiness, romance, and beautiful memories. By taking care of yourself and your loved one, you can enjoy the night confidently and safely.

So, whether you’re heading out with your partner or your friends, bring protection with you.
Carrying a condom isn’t something to be ashamed of — it’s a sign that you care about yourself and those around you.
