  4. “Pride Month” Is More Than Just Rainbows

“Pride Month” Is More Than Just Rainbows

Nov 22, 2025, 12:00 AMShareShare Article

Pride isn’t just about “celebration”—it’s about affirmation in a world that once turned a blind eye. Today, Morru will take you through the origins of Pride, explain LGBTQIA+, debunk 5 common myths, introduce new gender concepts, and share the historic progress on marriage equality in Thailand.

“Pride Month” Is More Than Just Rainbows

The Origins of Pride Month: From a Small Bar to a Global Movement

It all started at Stonewall Inn, a bar in New York City, in 1969. Back then, LGBTQ+ people were often arrested, harassed, and pushed out of society. One night, after yet another unjust police raid, the community fought back, shouting “Enough is enough!”
That moment sparked the Pride Movement.

Since then, June has become Pride Month—a time to show strength, celebrate identity, and declare:
“We belong here too!”

Who Are LGBTQIA+?

The acronym may look long, but Morru will break it down simply:

  • L – Lesbian (women who love women)
  • G – Gay (men who love men or same-sex attraction)
  • B – Bisexual (attracted to both same and different genders)
  • T – Transgender (people whose gender identity differs from their birth sex)
  • Q – Queer/Questioning (non-conforming or exploring identity)
  • I – Intersex (physical traits that don’t fit typical male/female categories)
  • A – Asexual (little or no sexual attraction)
  • + – Includes Non-Binary, Pansexual, Genderfluid, Demisexual, and more

This is a universe of identities—none of them wrong, none of them “weird.”

5 Common Myths About LGBTQIA+

“They choose to be this way.”
Sexual orientation isn’t a choice—it’s natural, not a trend.

“They can change if they want.”
LGBTQ+ isn’t a disease. It doesn’t need treatment, and no one should be forced to change.

“LGBTQ+ = promiscuous.”
Promiscuity is a behavior, not an identity. It has nothing to do with sexual orientation.

“Parents must have done something wrong.”
Being LGBTQ+ isn’t caused by parenting—it’s part of natural human diversity.

“There are only two genders.”
Gender isn’t just two boxes. Identity and expression can exist beyond male and female.

Mermaids and Blankets: New Ways to Understand Identity

  • Mermaids – A term used in some countries for people still exploring their identity, not ready to define themselves.
  • Blanket – Represents a sense of safety and privacy for those who aren’t ready to reveal their identity.

These concepts are gaining popularity among LGBTQ+ youth worldwide because they allow space—without pressure—to grow into themselves.

Morru believes this is about giving hearts the time they need, without forcing labels for others’ comfort.

Marriage Equality: Thailand’s Historic Step Forward

After years of waiting, Thailand is making history!
The Marriage Equality Bill passed its first reading in 2024, changing legal language from “man” and “woman” to “person”, allowing LGBTQ+ couples to marry legally.

Rights that come with this law:

  • Joint property management
  • Spousal benefits
  • Medical decision-making rights
  • Adoption rights

The bill is now in its second reading and is expected to take effect by 2025—a major step toward equal love and equal rights.

Advancing LGBTQIA+ Health Rights

Beyond marriage, healthcare access is improving:

What’s happening now:

  • Anonymous clinics and RSAT offer HIV testing, gender counseling, and PrEP
  • Some hospitals allow patients to choose gender titles in medical records

What’s coming:

  • Legal gender change on official documents
  • Coverage for gender-affirming care under public health and social security systems

Pride Is About Owning Your Identity

Whether you’re still exploring, unsure, or feeling misunderstood—Morru reminds you:
“Every identity matters. Every person deserves love.”

Pride isn’t just a rainbow month.
It’s the time we say:
“This is who I am—and I’m proud.”
